Capital Mass, the joint venture between the Church Urban Fund and the Diocese of London to alleviate poverty in the capital, has been launched at St Paul’s Cathedral.

The event, which was attended by the Bishop of London, Richard Chartres, brought together a cross-section of organisations and speakers who work to tackle poverty and inequality across the Diocese, exploring the work which Capital Mass will engage in and allowing attendees to meet those with first-hand experience of the problems being tackled by churches and charities across London.

Organisations and speakers in attendance included JustShare, based at St Mary le Bow, and Clean for Good, an ethical cleaning company that is the brainchild of the team at St Andrew’s-by-the-Wardrobe. Capital Mass’s Chairman, the Bishop of Stepney, the Rt Revd Adrian Newman also addressed the attendees.

Capital Mass aims to engage every parish in the Diocese of London in tackling poverty and inequality by informing, encouraging and equipping the episcopal areas, deaneries and parishes to amplify their impact in these areas. The work is an integral part of the Diocese of London’s Capital Vision 2020, whereby churches in London seek to serve the community in ways that are confident, compassionate and creative.

Among the activity planned by Capital Mass for 2016 are events on the response to the refugee crisis and a day-long conference and debate on housing ahead of London’s mayoral election.

Andy Burns, Executive Director of Capital Mass, said:

“What I enjoyed about the launch of Capital Mass was the spirit of celebration and connection. The atmosphere richly celebrated the church in action combined with a desire to connect with key parishes and partners as together we seek the welfare of London.

“It is our prayer that Capital Mass will pick up this energy and, through connecting parishes to the rich talent in our Diocese, we can add value into the lives of all who live and work in London.”
