The Diocese of London has published its Statement of Needs as part of the formal process to appoint the next Bishop of London.

What is a Statement of Needs?

A Statement of Needs is a key document in the Church of England’s episcopal appointment process. It sets out the Diocese’s context and specific spiritual, pastoral, and practical requirements, making it the foundation that guides the entire selection process. It is prepared following consultation and prayer, and is used to inform and influence those responsible for discerning and selecting the next bishop.

This document expresses the shared discernment of the Diocese of London about its current life, its mission context, and the qualities needed in its next bishop.

About the Diocese of London

London is an exceptionally large and diverse diocese, serving over 4 million people across a global city shaped by many cultures, languages and traditions.

The Statement highlights a moment of spiritual openness and opportunity. There is growing evidence of interest in Christian faith, particularly among younger people, alongside a renewed desire for Scripture, prayer, community and purpose.

Our churches reflect the global body of Christ and are rooted in local communities, serving with a strong missional heart. At the same time, the Diocese recognises challenges, including the need for greater unity and the careful resourcing of ministry.

Priorities for the Next Bishop

The Statement identifies three core priorities for episcopal leadership:

  • leading the Diocese in mission and evangelism as a servant leader
  • guarding the faith and sacraments with clarity and conviction
  • shepherding the people of God with love, wisdom and care

These priorities reflect the Diocese’s desire to renew its shared commitment to the gospel and to strengthen its worshipping communities.

Qualities Sought

The next Bishop of London is called to embody three key qualities:

  • Hopeful – a visionary leader in mission and ministry, inspiring growth and confidence in the gospel
  • Faithful – a steadfast guardian of the Church’s teaching, worship and sacramental life
  • Loving – a pastor who builds trust, fosters unity and cares deeply for the whole people of God

A Diocese Committed to Renewal

The Statement speaks with confidence and hope. It recognises both the scale and complexity of the Diocese and the opportunity for renewal through a shared focus on mission, prayer and the gospel that unites us.

It also highlights the importance of resourcing ministry well, supporting clergy and parishes, and strengthening the structures that enable local mission to flourish.

The full Statement of Needs sets out in detail the Diocese’s context, priorities and vision for the future.

We encourage all clergy, parish officers and congregations to read the document and to pray for wisdom, unity and discernment as the process of appointing the next Bishop of London continues.

Prayer for the Vacancy in See

O God, who searches hearts and knows the desires of your people,
light of the faithful and guardian of souls:
grant to the See of London
your grace in waiting,
your wisdom in listening,
and your discernment in calling.
In this time of vacancy,
give strength and resilience to the London College of Bishops,
and gather your people in patient hope;
that through prayer, conversation, and accord,
your Spirit may shape the shepherd you will send,
and your Church may grow into the full stature
of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen
