Resourcing church communities to grow sustained, communal patterns of discipleship in everyday life.
Our Vision
We support our diocesan vision for every Londoner to encounter the love of God in Christ.
Discipleship is learning to live from Jesus, with Jesus, and for Jesus.
By Staying with God, Sharing the Journey, and Serving Our World, the Spirit shapes us to become more Christ-like and welcome others into a Way of Life shaped by God’s love and life-giving presence.
How Discipleship takes shape
Discipleship rarely unfolds in a straight line. It takes shape through recurring patterns of life with God, shared in community.
We describe these patterns as Discipleship Cycles:
- Engage – Connecting with faith, church, and community ~ Come and see.’ John 1:39
- Explore – Engaging with Scripture and the story of faith ~ ‘Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly.’ Col 3:16
- Embody – Living like Jesus in everyday life ~ ‘Christ is formed in you.’ Galatians 4:19
- Express – Sharing gifts and discovering calling ~ Each of you should use whatever gift you have received.’ 1 Peter 4:10a
- Extend – Participating in God’s mission in the world ~ ‘As the Father has sent me, so I send you.’ John 20:21
At the centre of all of these is Encounter with God: God meeting us, drawing us in, and sending us out.
These are not stages to complete, but patterns that churches can notice, nurture, and revisit over time.
When fully embedded, these cycles help churches become communities where discipleship is not just a programme, but a way of life. Members meet God together, grow in faith through shared practices, use their gifts, and reach out in service – all as part of a rhythm shaped by God’s love.
How we support churches
Our Confident Disciples resources particularly support the Embody cycle – helping communities establish shared patterns of faith that are lived, practised, and sustained together.
Through communal practices, shared learning, and discernment, we help churches move from:
- individual → communal discipleship and spiritual formation
- occasional → sustained discipleship and spiritual formation
- theoretical → embodied in everyday life
