Two new Archdeacons for the Diocese of London

The Ven Richard Frank and Ven Adam Atkinson have been licensed as the Archdeacons of Middlesex and Charing Cross respectively and have begun supporting parishes in their parts of the Diocese of London, amid the unusual circumstances of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Having been announced as the next Archdeacon of Middlesex in January, Archdeacon Richard was licensed on 23rd March after stepping down as Vicar of All Souls, St Margarets. He had served at St Margarets since 2005 and was responsible for fostering significant growth in the size of the congregation.

As Archdeacon of Charing Cross, the Ven Adam Atkinson revives a role previously covered under delegated authority by the Archdeacon of London, the Ven Luke Miller. Formerly Vicar of St Peter’s Bethnal Green, Adam will continue his role as Director of Mission Development in the Two Cities Area.

Now in post, the Archdeacons will add their weight to efforts undertaken by clergy across the Diocese of London to ensure the Church continues to support and encourage Londoners in these unprecedented times.

The Bishop of London, the Rt Revd and Rt Hon Dame Sarah Mullally DBE, commented:

“I am deeply thankful that, in this difficult time, we are able to call on two clergymen with such commitment to pastoral care, leadership and vision to support their respective communities.”

The Archdeacon of Middlesex, the Ven Richard Frank, said:

“Over the past few days, in these difficult and unpredictable times, we have seen church leaders and members respond with energy, creativity and compassion to the needs of their communities and congregations.

“As I begin as Archdeacon of Middlesex, I am grateful to be able to serve the parish clergy, chaplains and churchwardens of the Kensington Episcopal Area, alongside Bishop Graham and the Area Team. Our church buildings may be closed, but the church itself is alive and active, living out the Good News of Jesus in our neighbourhoods, through our foodbanks, in worship online and pastoral care by phone. It is a huge privilege to support that work as I take on this new role.”

The Archdeacon of Charing Cross, the Ven Adam Atkinson, said:

“I’m absolutely delighted to join Bishop Sarah‘s team in a full-time capacity as Archdeacon. I look forward to adding value both in the support and encouragement of clergy as well as helping the church in Central London embrace and display even more missional dynamism. I have enjoyed working with the remarkable back office team, whom I know put their heart and soul into the flourishing of our shared ministry.

“I know what it’s like to be in the front line having been a priest in Stepney Area for over a decade. Being appointed now feels a bit like it happening in the field of battle. It is good to be alongside such a remarkable sisters and brothers in Christ as we respond to the changing circumstances of our time and equip the Church to meet the needs of a new generation.”
