Ben Lovell, former Vicar of St Mary’s Hampton, has appeared in court and pleaded guilty to criminal offences, related to attempted online communication with a minor, following an investigation by the Metropolitan Police. The alleged offences do not relate to his role at St Mary’s, or to any other role, or to his family.

On notification of Ben Lovell’s arrest last year, statutory agencies and the Diocese coordinated to put safeguarding and risk management measures in place to protect the parish community and to ensure that children, young people and vulnerable adults remained safe. Bail conditions were imposed immediately following arrest, and he was suspended from ministry, and stepped back from his other responsibilities. These measures have been reviewed and maintained throughout the police investigation.

Statutory agencies have advised the Diocese on what could be communicated publicly and when, to respect the integrity of the ongoing police investigation. The matter remains subject to court process, which should be allowed to conclude fairly and independently.

We encourage anyone who has been a victim or survivor of any crime, including sexual offending or abuse, to come forward in the knowledge that they will be listened to, treated with respect, and taken seriously. See here for contact information.
