New clergy and lay members are being elected to General Synod this year – and you are invited to stand as a candidate.

General Synod, the national assembly of the Church of England, shapes and approves legislation and discusses issues affecting the life and mission of the Church.

This autumn, elections are taking place for a new General Synod, with those elected serving a five-year term.

Michelle Gardner, Head of Governance in the Diocese of London, said: “Many people who attend church regularly will be eligible to stand as a lay member of General Synod. You don’t need specialist skills, previous experience of public speaking, or to have served on a PCC, Deanery Synod or Diocesan Synod.

“You’re not expected to understand every aspect of how the Church or General Synod works before putting yourself forward. If you’re elected, there is support to help you get started. Serving on General Synod is an opportunity to help shape the future of the Church of England, and I would encourage anyone who is interested to find out more and consider standing.”
