Taking a strengths-based approach to ministerial development

23rd February 2027, Diocesan House, 10am-4pm 2027

We are offering this programme with Humantalk to support clergy in their ministerial development through an intentional focus on their innate, God-given gifts, talents and strengths. The traditional approach to training and development has been to identify what’s ‘wrong’ with someone, or what’s missing from their skillset, and to attempt to plug the gap. A strengths-based approach to development does the opposite and begins by asking ‘what’s right?’: a more fruitful and honouring place to start.

‘StrengthsFinder® for Clergy’ is a one-day programme giving you the opportunity to discover your strengths and how you can use your StrengthsFinder® profile to support your ministerial development. By participating in this programme you will receive a 25-page personalised report providing you with a breakdown of your unique strengths along with recommended actions.

‘StrengthsFinder’ (now called CliftonStrengths®) is a leading strengths-based profiling tool, which draws upon extensive research conducted by Gallup over a 40-year period. The initial research looked at when people were functioning at their best and sought to identify the underlying drivers (thoughts, feelings, actions) that enabled this to happen. It is a hopeful and encouraging way to pursue personal and professional development. There is also a strong theological mandate for discovering and nurturing our gifts in the service of God and His people. We may be broken and fallible, but we are also blessed and, in Christ’s strength, capable. StrengthsFinder® is one way of identifying, articulating and working with our God-given capabilities.
