Moving home is an exciting time, but it can also be busy and stressful. Amid the packing, paperwork and settling into a new home, utility accounts can easily be overlooked.
However, taking a few simple steps when moving into or out of a clergy property can help prevent billing issues, unnecessary costs and lengthy disputes with utility suppliers.
When moving into a property
On the day you move in, please take meter readings for all utilities, including:
- Electricity
- Gas (where applicable)
- Water (where metered)
We recommend taking a photograph of each meter reading and keeping it for your records.
Please send a copy of your opening meter readings to property.enquiries@london.anglican.org.
Providing accurate opening readings helps ensure that you are only charged for utilities used during your occupation and prevents any confusion regarding previous occupants’ usage.
When moving out of a property
Before leaving a property, please remember to:
- Take final meter readings on your last day of occupation.
- Photograph the readings for your records.
- Send the readings to the Property Team.
- Provide a forwarding address where appropriate.
Accurate closing readings help ensure that utility accounts can be updated correctly and prevent ongoing charges from being linked to the wrong occupant.
Why is this important?
The Diocese manages a large property portfolio, and utility suppliers rely on accurate information to update accounts when occupants change.
Without meter readings and occupancy information, suppliers may issue estimated bills, which can result in:
- Incorrect charges.
- Delays in closing accounts.
- Disputes regarding responsibility for energy usage.
- Additional administration for both occupants and the Property Team.
By taking a few minutes to record and share meter readings, you can help avoid these issues and ensure a smooth transition between occupants.
Need help?
If you are unsure where meters are located, have concerns about a utility account, or require assistance during a move, please contact the Property Team as early as possible.
Thank you for helping us keep utility records accurate and up to date across the Diocese.
