Sandra McCalla

The Revd Preb Sandra McCalla, Chaplain to the Bishop of London, has been appointed as the next Archdeacon of Rochester. Since her ordination in 2012, Preb Sandra’s ministerial career has been served across the Diocese of London, becoming a key member of Bishop Sarah’s team in 2021.

The Rt Revd and Rt Hon Dame Sarah Mullally DBE commented:

“Sandra has played a vital role in spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ across the parishes and communities of the Diocese of London. I would like to thank Sandra in particular for the contribution she has made to my office over the past three years as the first person to serve as my Chaplain. She has shown insight and kindness.

“Sandra will be greatly missed by all those who have had the pleasure of working with her. I look forward to seeing her continue to flourish in her new role in Rochester, as she leaves with my prayers and gratitude.”

Following a career as a barrister, after ordination, Preb Sandra initially served in the Parish of Poplar and then became the first female Vicar of St Leonard’s Church, Heston, following which she was appointed to the role of Chaplain to the Bishop of London.

She was the Area Dean of Cultural Diversity in the Kensington Episcopal Area and has been a founder member of the Diocese of London’s Racial Justice Priority Group. She has helped develop the Wilfred Wood Leadership Programme, encouraging Global Majority Heritage senior leadership roles within the clergy.

As a Chaplain and Formation Tutor at St Mellitus Theological College, Preb Sandra has provided pastoral care for students and ordinands, as well as teaching those undergoing training in theology. She also takes an active role as a member of the College of Canons at St Paul’s Cathedral and sits on the Nominations Committee.

The Revd Preb Sandra McCalla said:

“It is my privilege to be joining the Diocese of Rochester, continuing along God’s path to serve the people, parishes and chaplaincies across the community. At the same time, I will dearly miss and am thankful for all the friends and colleagues with whom I have had the pleasure of sharing my ministry throughout my time in the Diocese of London.

“I look forward to sharing mission and ministry with new friends and colleagues in my new role in the Diocese of Rochester. I would ask for your prayers as I endeavour to support and serve local communities across the Diocese, implementing the Called Together priorities and sharing the love of Jesus.”
