New guidance has been published for parishes considering the installation of gas boilers in churches under faculty. This has been produced by the London Diocesan Advisory Committee, in collaboration with the Chancellor.
It incorporates national guidance issued by the Church of England targeting net zero carbon emissions. Responding to the prophetic call from General Synod for Net Zero Carbon by 2030, the Church recommends electrically powered systems and advises against the use of fossil fuel gas.
Parishes are asked to consider the guidance carefully if considering a new gas boiler and contact their Archdeacon or the DAC via Jonathan Ward (Net Zero Carbon Buildings Lead) or their usual contact if they are in need of further clarification or guidance.
The Ven. Richard Frank, Chair of the Net Zero Carbon Steering Group, welcomed the new guidance.
“It is very helpful to have a short summary that lays out clearly what churches need to consider if they are seeking Faculty to install a new gas heating system. I would encourage all parishes to consider this guidance when exploring their future net zero carbon journey, alongside the extensive Church Of England resources on lower carbon heating systems”.
