The Rt Revd Rod Green was consecrated as Bishop of Stepney at a service on Friday 1st May at St Paul’s Cathedral. The consecration service was attended by hundreds of family, friends, colleagues and supporters praying for and supporting Bishop Rod in his ministry.

Bishop Rod was formally introduced as the next Bishop of Stepney in March during a visit to a number of churches and schools within the Stepney area, including St Dunstan’s Stepney, St Mary Magdalene Academy Islington, Hope Church Islington and St John of Jerusalem Hackney.

The appointment is a return to the Diocese of London for Rod, who was ordained priest in the Stepney Area in 2008, serving his curacy at Christ Church Spitalfields, before taking up the role of Associate Rector at St Paul’s, Shadwell in 2011. In 2014 Rod was appointed Vicar at St Peter’s, West Harrow, in the Willesden Area. He served as Archdeacon of Llandaff from 2021.

The Rt Revd Rod Green, Bishop of Stepney, said:

It’s been an incredible day here at St Paul’s. To be surrounded by my family and so many friends at such a significant moment for me is amazing. I am so grateful for the support, encouragement and prayers of everyone.

“I am excited to begin this next chapter of ministry among the people of Stepney, serving the clergy and people of God as Bishop. I look forward to joining in with what God is already doing in and through the churches in the Stepney Area.”

The Acting Bishop of London, the Rt Revd Dr Emma Ineson, added:

I was thrilled to welcome Bishop Rod and his family back to the Diocese of London today.

“His leadership, warmth and evangelistic heart will equip him well to inspire the people of east London with faith in Jesus. We look forward to walking with him in this new ministry over the coming years.”

The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Revd Sarah Mullally, said:

I’m delighted for Bishop Rod as he takes this next step in his ministry. I know that it is a welcome return to where he first discerned his call to ordained ministry.

“Bishop Rod brings much experience in building up the church and reaching beyond its walls to share the good news of Jesus Christ. I know his skills in preaching, theological teaching and leadership development will be a blessing to the diocese. I look forward to serving alongside Bishop Rod, and will be praying for him and his family as they settle into this new chapter.”

Bishop Rod succeeds the Rt Revd Joanne Grenfell as Bishop, who stepped down in September 2025 following her appointment as Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich. Bishop Rod’s installation services will take place during Evensong on 31st May, also at St Paul’s Cathedral.
