London churches looking to enhance their grounds, boost biodiversity or create new community green spaces could benefit from a major new funding opportunity from the Mayor of London.

The Green Roots Fund is offering grants ranging from £10,000 to £500,000 for projects that create, improve or expand green and blue infrastructure across the capital.

The fund is open to a wide range of projects that help communities connect with nature and improve the local environment. For churches, this could include community gardens, tree planting initiatives, churchyard biodiversity projects, sustainable drainage schemes, habitat creation, and projects that increase public access to green spaces.

Churches are uniquely placed to contribute to London’s environmental goals. Many churchyards already serve as important habitats for wildlife, while church grounds can provide welcoming spaces for local communities to gather, grow food, learn about nature and enjoy the benefits of green space.

The funding presents an opportunity for parishes to develop ambitious projects that support creation care, strengthen community engagement and improve environmental sustainability in their local area.

Applications are open now, with a deadline of 14 January 2027.

Parishes interested in applying are encouraged to start planning early and to get in touch if they would like to discuss a potential project or explore how their church grounds could be developed to benefit both people and nature.
