More than 1,600 pupils and staff gathered at St Paul’s Cathedral last week for the annual service of the London Diocesan Board for Schools. The celebration focused on the theme The Power of Forgiveness: Restoring Relationships.
The cathedral was filled with colour, music and prayer as children from schools across the diocese came together to reflect on the profound Christian message of God’s forgiveness and the restoration He offers. The service created space for worship, creativity and thoughtful reflection, highlighting the distinctive Christian character at the heart of diocesan education.
A particularly moving moment was the interactive artwork, a shared jigsaw project symbolising restoration and community. As individual pieces were brought together, the image demonstrated how forgiveness and reconciliation can rebuild what has been broken and strengthen relationships within school communities and beyond.
Pupils played a central role throughout the service. They co-led prayers, dramatised Bible readings, presented musical pieces and sang as part of a massed choir. Banners carried in procession by students from across the schools offered a vivid expression of unity and shared purpose.
The Rt Revd Bishop Anderson delivered an inspiring address, encouraging pupils to practise forgiveness in their daily lives and to become ambassadors of reconciliation in their schools and communities.
Reflecting on the occasion, Bishop Anderson said:
The London Diocesan Board for Schools service at St Paul’s Cathedral was a truly wonderful occasion and a joyful celebration of the incredible work taking place across our schools. It was deeply encouraging to see so many young people gathered together in such a magnificent setting, engaging so thoughtfully with the theme of forgiveness. From the shared jigsaw project to the beautiful music and the reverent way in which pupils led and participated in the service, the whole event was uplifting. It was an inspiring and faith filled experience for the more than one thousand students in attendance, and a powerful reminder of the hope and restoration that sit at the heart of our Christian vision.
The annual London Diocesan Board for Schools service remains an important moment in the diocesan calendar, bringing together pupils and staff to celebrate faith, community and the shared commitment to nurturing schools rooted in forgiveness, hope and love.
