The Rt Rev Dr Ric Thorpe, Bishop of Islington, is one of the candidates to become the next Archbishop of Melbourne in the Anglican Church of Australia. This follows an extensive consultation process carried out by the Diocese, following the retirement of Archbishop Philip Freier.

Melbourne’s Synod members will ultimately decide upon the next Archbishop at an Election Synod later this month. More details on the process can be found here.

Bishop of London, Dame Sarah Mullally, said,

“Our prayers are with Ric and his family over these next few weeks as the discernment process comes to its conclusion. We also hold our sisters and brothers across the globe in Melbourne Diocese in our thoughts and prayers, during this period of uncertainty and excitement.”

Bishop Ric added,

“It’s very humbling to be considered for this role. We are walking the journey of discernment prayerfully, and trust in the guidance of the Holy Spirit, whatever the outcome may be.”

The Diocese of Melbourne is the metropolitan province of Victoria in the Anglican Church of Australia. With 200 parishes, its cathedral church is St Paul’s Cathedral in Melbourne, the seat of the Archbishop.
