This introductory-level training is specifically designed to help owners, custodians, volunteers and users of historic buildings, including historic places of worship, understand their building, and take practical action to look after it. It explains how traditional buildings were constructed, how they work and can decay, and how to spot and tackle common problems.

The course explains how ‘maintenance’ differs from ‘repair’ and emphasises the value of carrying out regular checks and simple steps to keep buildings in good condition. It places maintenance issues into context by looking at local building types, construction methods, and common materials in the area.

The day includes a practical exercise looking at local buildings to identify maintenance issues and areas of vulnerability. Participants will also have an opportunity to discuss their own building with the tutor and others attending.

Lunch and refreshments provided free of charge.
