Area Council By-Elections Spring 2025

An opportunity to help shape the mission, ministry, safeguarding, spending and administration of the Diocese of London in your Episcopal Area.

We have several lay and clerical vacancies on different Area Councils:

  • Two Cities Area Council – three clerical vacancies and three laity vacancies.
  • Stepney Area Council – two clerical vacancies and two laity vacancies.
  • Edmonton Area Council – one laity vacancy.
  • Willesden – three clerical vacancies and four laity vacancies.

Essential facts about Area Council:

  • The Councils are Chaired by the Episcopal Area Bishop.
  • They have between 15-20 members, equally split between clergy and laity.
  • Members meet in the early evenings three to six times a year (depending on the Area).
  • Meetings can take place on-site or online.
  • Meetings last between 60 minutes to two hours.

Who can stand in a by-election?

  • Any lay person who is taking communion (at least three times in the last year), is confirmed, is aged sixteen or over and whose name is entered on the electoral roll of a parish in the Area they wish to represent.
  • Any member of clergy who is a member of a deanery synod in the relevant Area can stand to be elected to the Area Council for that Area, by the House of Clergy of the relevant deanery synod(s).

Who votes in a by-election?

  • All members of the House of Laity of the deanery synod except co-opted members vote in the lay elections. All members of the House of Clergy of the deanery synod except co-opted members vote in the clergy elections.
