The Diocese of London is drawing on more than a thousand contributions as it prepares the Statement of Needs for the next Bishop of London. As part of this ongoing discernment, a public online consultation will take place on 26 February, offering another chance for people across the Diocese to share their reflections.

As Bishop Sarah leaves her role as the Bishop of London this month, the Vacancy in See Committee is preparing the Diocese’s input into the appointment process for her successor through its Statement of Needs. Last year, people across the Diocese were invited to share their reflections through an online consultation. The response was both extensive and encouraging with over 1,000 submissions received from across the Diocese, speaking candidly about opportunities and challenges of ministry and ministry in London and priorities and qualities for the next Bishop of London.

The Committee is extremely grateful to every individual, parish, group and ministry that took part and has begun drafting the Statement of Needs, informed by the wide range of contributions.

The Statement of Needs will set out:

  • the character, mission and context of the Diocese of London
  • the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead; and
  • the qualities, gifts and experience sought in the next Bishop of London.

This Statement will be published around Easter and form a critical input to the Crown Nominations Commission that selects the next Bishop of London.

Public Consultation – 26 February, 6-7.30pm

People across the Diocese have a further opportunity to share their views at an online meeting with the Archbishops’ and Prime Minister’s Appointments Advisers, Stephen Knott and Jonathan Hellewell. This meeting is part of the national advisers’ consultation which also feeds into the Crown Nominations Commission who appoint the next Bishop of London.

The meeting will be from 6pm-7.30pm, is open to all, will held online via Zoom and be chaired by the Chair of the Vacancy in See Committee.

People wishing to attend should register by completing this form. Participants will be sent the Zoom link and joining instructions before the meeting.

As we continue this period of discernment, we invite the whole Diocese to hold this process in prayer. May we remain attentive to the prompting of the Holy Spirit, faithful in our common life, and hopeful for all that God is preparing for us.

Prayer for the Vacancy in See

God of silence and searching,
light of the faithful and guardian of souls:
grant to the See of London
your grace in waiting,
your wisdom in listening,
and your discernment in calling.
In this time of vacancy,
give strength and resilience to the London College of Bishops,
and gather your people in patient hope;
that through prayer, conversation, and accord,
your Spirit may shape the shepherd you will send,
and your Church may grow into the full stature
of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.

Amen.
