Pope Francis’ pastoral leadership was grounded in compassion and humility. From the very start of his pontificate, he called the Church to go to the margins, to reach out to the poorest, the excluded, those whom society too often forgets. His simple gestures spoke louder than words: washing the feet of prisoners, embracing refugees, and sitting quietly with those in pain. He reminded us that at the heart of the Gospel is mercy and hope.

London’s vibrant Catholic community will particularly mourn his loss, but also give thanks for the inspiration he has been. In our own diocese, many local initiatives for social justice, sustainability, and interfaith friendship have been encouraged by his teaching and example.

Like others who have paid tribute, we will remember Pope Francis’ fearless witness to truth in the public square, his appeal for care of our common home, his prophetic voice, and his urgent plea for peace in regions torn by conflict. His was a politics rooted in love and, under Pope Francis’ guidance, the Church deepened friendships across traditions and strengthened bonds with communities of faith who share a longing for peace and reconciliation.

May he rest in peace, and may his example continue to guide and encourage us in the service of Christ.
