As winter draws in, colder weather and increased heating can bring a familiar challenge: mould, damp, and condensation. While often small to begin with, if left unchecked they can cause damage and discomfort and, in some cases, affect our health.

The good news is that with a few simple habits, you can greatly reduce the risk. A little ventilation and care can go a long way in keeping your home warm, dry and healthy this winter.

What’s the Difference?

  • Condensation forms when warm, moist air meets a cold surface like windows or walls and turns into water droplets.
  • Damp can result from leaks, rising moisture, or persistent condensation that hasn’t been cleared.
  • Mould grows in damp, poorly ventilated areas. It often appears as black or greenish spots on walls, ceilings, or around window frames.

Simple Ways to Reduce Moisture

  1. Let fresh air in.
Open windows or use extractor fans for short periods, especially after cooking, showering, or drying clothes. Even ten minutes of ventilation each day can help prevent moisture build-up.
  2. Wipe away condensation.
Each morning, check for moisture on windows and sills and wipe them dry. This small habit can prevent mould from taking hold.
  3. Keep a steady warmth.
Try to maintain a consistent temperature throughout your home. Sudden changes between warm and cold can increase condensation.
  4. Dry clothes carefully.
If drying indoors, use a clothes airer in a well-ventilated room and open a window slightly. Avoid placing clothes directly on radiators, as this increases moisture in the air.
  5. Allow air to circulate.
Keep a little space between furniture and walls, especially external walls. This helps air move freely and keeps surfaces dry.
  6. Use lids when cooking.
Cover pans and use extractor fans to keep steam to a minimum.
  7. Report any leaks promptly.
If you notice persistent damp patches, leaks, or mould that reappears, please let the Housing Team know as soon as possible. Early attention helps prevent long-term damage.

If You Notice Mould

If mould appears, clean it promptly using a mild detergent or mould remover (and follow safety instructions). Dry the area completely afterward. If the issue persists, please report it so further checks can be made.

A Final Thought

A healthy home supports a healthy ministry. By keeping your living space ventilated, gently heated, and cared for, you can create a more comfortable environment through the colder months – both for yourself and for those you welcome into your home.  If you notice any problems, please do not hesitate to report them.
