Celebrating the Coronation Weekend

The Coronation of King Charles III will take place on Saturday 6 May 2023 at Westminster Abbey.

The Church of England has published an information pack outlining how churches and chaplaincies can get involved in this important moment in our nation’s life.

There is also a range of resources on the Church of England website with suggested prayers and sample orders of service, including a Vigil Service for the day or evening before the Coronation.

Some of the key highlights:

  • The Church of England has compiled a series of 28 Daily Prayers, from Easter Day to Coronation Day. They will include a daily theme, reading and reflection.
Digital versions will be available, but there is also a booklet.
  • For those churches who wish to screen the coronation, the BBC has confirmed a special one-off TV licence dispensation for both the live Ceremonial Coverage on Saturday 6 May and the Coronation Concert on Sunday 7 May.
  • The Coronation Big Lunch’ on Sunday 7 May will encourage communities of all kinds to share food and celebrate this historic occasion together.
  • ‘The Big Help Out’ on Monday 8 May will shine a light on the thousands of people volunteering each week, as well as creating an opportunity to reach out and engage with new volunteers. Perhaps your church could run a bell ringers sample session?
