Becoming the #TechVicar

The Revd Graham Hunter

The Oxford English Dictionary suggests ‘a techie’ as being ‘A person who is expert in or enthusiastic about technology, especially computing.’ In human form, the Revd Graham Hunter of St John’s Hoxton is a prime example. In a recent blog written for the Church of England, he states he likes good design, clever functionality and describes himself as a big fan of technology, liking computers, apps and gadgets.

If you followed his tweeting for @OurCofE at the end of October, then you’ll know how he is able to fit in his love of techie stuff with running a very busy and vibrant parish in the heart of ‘silicon Shoreditch’ or ‘tech city’. Added to this, in late September his church hosted one of the biggest Hackathons to be held in the east end. More than 500 people came together to code and learn more about new technology right next to ‘the silicon roundabout’. At this event, BBC digital launched Micro:bit, a small computing device for children (and adults) to learn coding. One million Micro:bit devices are due to be distributed to every 11-year-old in the country next Spring.

Mixed with the missional community, Tech City Christians (who meet in his crypt), he is more than qualified to have earned the hashtag #TechVicar. His Church of England blog is now online, where he highlights three observations about the relationship between Christian faith and the world of tech.
