Catholic Life in the Church of England: Catholic Life in the World – Justice, Evangelism, and Baptism

A study day as part of a series exploring the catholic tradition in the Church of England today, offering wisdom for every Christian. The day starts with Mass at 10am, followed by three talks from three excellent speakers with a break for lunch, and concludes with Evensong and Benediction at 3pm. All welcome.

The Rev’d Canon Jarel Robinson-Brown

Fr Jarel is Assistant Curate at St Botolph-without-Aldgate, Visiting Scholar at Sarum College Salisbury and Co-Chair of OneBodyOneFaith. He currently undertaking doctoral studies with Fr John Behr at the University of Aberdeen looking at the body and desire in Coptic monasticism.

The Rev’d Katy Cunliffe SCP

Morwenna is Professor of Christian History and Theology at the University of Exeter and Canon Theologian at Exeter Cathedral. Her talk will explore how for the first millennium and a half of Christianity celibacy – a voluntary single life dedicated to God – was seen as superior to marriage. Many Christians today still hold to that view. So what are the sources and roots of that idea? How does it relate to the bible and to early Christian practice? How did early Christian ideas of celibacy relate to marriage and how might we understand that relationship today?

The Rev’d Dr Tina Beardsley SMMS

Mthr Christina (Tina) Beardsley SMMS, a Church of England priest, is a member of the dispersed Anglican community, The Sodality of Mary, Mother of Priests. Born in West Yorkshire, Tina moved first to Brighton – where she met her husband, Rob – to read Religious Studies at Sussex University, and then to St John’s College, Cambridge, where her doctoral studies were on the Victorian Romantic preacher, ‘Robertson of Brighton’. Her focus was Robertson’s theology and she’s subsequently written a biography, Unutterable Love: The passionate Life & Preaching of FW Robertson (Lutterworth, 2009). Tina was a healthcare chaplain for fifteen years, mostly at the Chelsea & Westminster Hospital, where she was Head of Multi-faith Chaplaincy from 2008-2016. Now retired and helping in London churches, north and south of the Thames, Tina is a Visiting Scholar at Sarum College, and co-author of a trilogy of books about the spiritual care of trans people.
