Catholic Life in the Church of England: Catholic Life at the Altar

The first of a series of four study days exploring the catholic tradition in the Church of England today, offering wisdom for every Christian. The day starts at 11am with Mass, followed by three talks from three excellent speakers including a break for lunch, and concludes with Evensong and Benediction at 3pm. All welcome.

Speakers

Archbishop Rowan Williams

Dr Rowan Williams’ career began as a lecturer at Mirfield (1975-1977). In 1984 he was elected a Fellow and Dean of Clare College, Cambridge. During his time at Clare he was arrested and fined for singing psalms as part of the CND protest at Lakenheath air-base. Then, still only 36, it was back to Oxford as Lady Margaret Professor of Divinity for six years, before becoming Bishop of Monmouth, and, from 2000, Archbishop of Wales. In 2002, he became the 104th Archbishop of Canterbury.

Fr Michael Leyden

Michael Leyden is the Dean of Emmanuel Theological College. As Dean he oversees the community and routinely teaches, specializing in the interface of theology and contemporary Christian ethics. Michael also spent 11 years serving as a vicar in Liverpool and Chester Dioceses, particularly in blended-economy and post-industrial parishes. In a review of his book, Faithful Living: Discipleship, Creed and Ethics, Michael was critiqued for “nail[ing] his colours firmly to the mast of Nicene orthodoxy”.

Mthr Melanie Marshall

Mthr Mel is a classicist by training and was a curate in lovely London diocese. She lives in Oxford and has worked in university chaplaincy for the last eight years. She loves opera and knitting and poetry and writing sermons and singing the Mass and helping her friends with their renaissance Latin, but above all she loves hanging out with people.
