St James the Less: chalk assault courses and painted pebbles

St James the Less, Bethnal Green have been using painted pebbles and chalk ‘assault courses’ to bring some extra joy to their local community.

Since lockdown began, their youngest church-goers have designed chalk ‘assault courses’ outside the church, including star jumps, a giant hopscotch, and frog jumps. The simple aim being for local families to have fun and get some exercise.

Members of the church have painted pebbles with encouraging and joy giving slogans and placed them on the road for people to find. The benefits have been many – from the sound of giggles as locals find the exercise fun, to reminding people that they are loved and part of something bigger, to breaking down people’s perception of what the church is and what it does and who it is for.

A simple and accessible activity, but one with an impact.
