The Communications Assistant will work with the Communications Manager to run the diocesan digital platforms – the website and social media channels – and to communicate on behalf of colleagues and senior clergy. They will also gather good news stories from churches around the diocese, writing articles for the website and creating content for Instagram.

The Communications Assistant will help to produce the diocesan e-newsletter which goes out every fortnight to all parishes and clergy. The role also includes some support work, particularly with the production of the cycle of prayer.

The London Diocese communications team aims to support parishes in communicating the gospel affectively using new media. The ‘Faith and Social Media Network’ was formed in 2019, which meets for networking and learning events, and has a Facebook group. The team also runs digital training events for parishes. The Communications Assistant role will support these activities.

Main Responsibilities

  • Use social media effectively to share good news stories, and to promote events and resources.
  • Identify good news stories and produce copy and images for sharing more widely.
  • Manage the communications email inbox, either responding to enquiries or directing it to the relevant colleague.
  • Produce, with the Communications Manager, the fortnightly e-newsletter.
  • Develop and manage the Faith and Social Media network.
  • Work with other teams to enhance their communications output.
  • Maintain the Diocesan website, particularly the formatting and publishing of stories and updating clergy moves.
  • Publicise events.
  • Manage the production of the cycle of prayer.
  • Occasionally provide events management support including the ticketing, marketing, planning and delivery.

Person Specification

Essentials

  • A motivated self-starter, with an enthusiasm for communicating the good news of the Church in London.
  • Exceptional literacy skills including a high standard of written and verbal communication.
  • Strong proof-reading skills and attention to detail.
  • Personable, and able to deal with a wide range of styles, ages, cultures and approaches.
  • Ability to write clear concise copy, and have some experience of writing for online media.
  • Good organisational and resource planning skills, to successfully manage competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Strong team working skills, to build and maintain working relationships across our organisation.
  • A willingness to work flexibly and continually develop your skills and knowledge.
  • A proactive, can-do attitude.

Desirables

  • A working knowledge of the Church of England.
  • Experience working in marketing, communications or journalism, or a graduate in a relevant discipline.
  • Experience working in WordPress, Mailchimp, and using social media.

Other information

This a hybrid role, but when in the office you will be based at Diocesan House, Causton Street, SW1P 4AU.
Occasional evening or weekend work may be required.
