Sports blog: Use the world cup to preach the gospel!
What a feast of football we have ahead of us this summer as the World Cup takes centre stage! As 32 teams battle it out to be crowned the best on the planet at Russia 2018, millions of sportspeople across the UK will be gripped by the action. For a month from the opening match on 14th June, the World Cup will quite simply be hard to ignore as every little story makes big headlines.
Our partners at Christians in Sport’s mission is to reach the world of sport for Christ. And with more than 10 million people playing sport each week in the UK across 150,000 clubs they are passionate about helping the church reach them with the gospel.
With so much interest in the tournament, the World Cup offers many great opportunities to share the good news of Jesus. And they are delighted to announce that a new multimedia World Cup quiz, an evangelistic short film and a collection of school resources produced in partnership with Scripture Union have been released to help churches do just that.
Since the first Sports Mission Pack was released in 2016, the resources have been downloaded by more than 1,000 people and churches and we pray that the World Cup additions prove equally well used.
Ian Lancaster, Christians in Sport’s UK Team Leader, said:
“All the indications are that the 2018 World Cup is going to be huge. We want to reach the world of sport for Christ and believe that these World Cup additions to the Sports Mission Pack can help play a big part. They are designed to help Christian sportspeople and churches, who are engaging in their local clubs and teams, share the gospel with some of the millions of sportspeople in this country.”
The pack contains everything churches and Christian groups need to put on a variety of events and encourage their congregations to get involved. The Christians in Sport team are also able to provide support at events, so those who download the pack are encouraged to get in touch if that is something they would like.
