Who can be elected?

Details of the full requirements can be found on the nomination forms. However, the general position in brief is as follows:

Any clergy person who is a member of a deanery synod in the Stepney Episcopal Area can stand to be elected to the Stepney Area Council, by the existing clerical members of the Area Council.

Who should stand for election?

Anybody who qualifies to be elected and who feels they have a role to play on the Area Council should complete a nomination form and return it to the Presiding Officer (address on the form).

What is the role of the Area Councils?

The role of the Area Councils include providing support and advice to the Area Bishop on the mission, ministry and administration of the church in the Area; being responsible for carrying out certain duties relating to the Mission and Pastoral Measure, and taking financial responsibility for monies allocated to the Area. Further details are included in a paper which is sent with the nomination forms.

How to stand for election

First of all, complete the relevant nomination form, available from the Synodical Department.

For clergy: please ensure that you are a member of a deanery synod in the Area. Please ensure that you tell us which is the church/institution to which you are licensed, or benefice of which you are the incumbent – and the Area in which you are standing for election. This will be the Area in which the church/institution you belong to is situated. Please follow the instructions on the nomination form concerning who can propose and second your nomination. They must be clerical members of the Area Council.
