Soul at St James – Gospel singing workshop

Chantelle Johnson explores Soul at Saint James which will take place on Sunday 5 September. You can book your free tickets here

Soul at Saint James is a monthly event, offering a free a gospel singing workshop, hugely valuable to any church that has, or wants to have, a gospel choir.

It is hosted by Soul Sanctuary Gospel Choir and St James’ Church Piccadilly in the Church’s courtyard. The choir’s mission is to spread faith and joy through music, spoken word poetry and narration to explore life’s important themes.

Choir Director, Clarence Hunte said:

“We weren’t able to fulfil our mission in a live setting at Soul at Saint James throughout 2020, we went online to explore themes relating to life’s important values with our audience. Now we are able return to the courtyard of St James’ Piccadilly, we aim to continue to spread the wonders of gospel music at Soul at Saint James and encourage anyone to joins us!”

This month’s theme is Earth, and through the immersive event, Soul Sanctuary Gospel Choir are welcoming people to think about how they can act together to prioritise the needs of the environment.

The gospel singing workshop will begin at 2pm, followed by a main stage set of music by the choir and other artists. There will be an opportunity to learn how to sing songs in harmony, which the choir are encouraging everyone at all singing levels to take part in.

Rev Lucy Winkett, Rector of St James’s Piccadilly:

“Soul at Saint James is outside in the courtyard, deliberately in the space between the church and the street. Soul-drenching music, thoughtful spoken-word artists, great food and drink. Everyone’s welcome to come and figure out what it means to be human, and even learn to sing gospel if you want to”
