Priest Missioner appointed for Tottenham Hale’s Engine Room

The Diocese of London has announced that the Revd Andrew Williams, Rector of Applecross in Perth, Western Australia, will be the next Priest Missioner in the new community at Hale Village in Tottenham Hale.

The Hale Village development in Tottenham Hale will see accommodation developed for 16,000 new residents over the next 10-15 years on the boundaries of St Mary’s and Holy Trinity Tottenham.

As Priest Missioner, Andrew will oversee the extensive community engagement of the Engine Room – Hale Village’s interim community centre – and work with partners including developers, estates management, housing associations and local authorities to ensure the success of the Hale Village’s new church and community centre. The centre, which is currently under construction, will provide a main sanctuary and hall, a community café, a flexible area for meetings and activities, a 26-place day nursery and an office to support the residents of Hale Village.

The Diocese of London, in partnership with London City Mission, the Church Commissioners, the Mercers’ Company and with the support of generous individual donors, has established the church and community centre within the estate to serve the new community as it grows and to ensure that strong links are built with the established neighbouring communities such as the Ferry Lane estate.

Andrew was recruited for his skills in community engagement and parish leadership. A proven team-worker, he will be working with the Engine Room’s two experienced community workers from London City Mission, Andrew and Martina Kwapong, who have been building relationships and reaching local residents on the estate since 2011.

Andrew is no stranger to London, having been ordained into the Church of England in 1993 and served in the Dioceses of Rochester and London – including as Rector of St Mary-at-Finchley – until his move to Australia in 2008. He and his family will move to London for the Autumn, when he will take up the position.

The Revd Andrew Williams, new Priest Missioner at the Engine Room Tottenham Hale, commented:

"I am very excited about joining the team at the Engine Room and participating in all the good work that is already happening. I am looking forward to learning from the existing, as well as the emerging community, how the church can be an effective partner in the lives of the people of Tottenham Hale so that we can build a vibrant and spiritually fulfilling community together."
