The Bishop of London visits Resurgo Trust
Last week, the Bishop of London, Richard Chartres, visited the Resurgo Trust in Hammersmith, a charity based in the Diocese of London which helps local communities overcome social challenges through church-based social ventures.
During his visit, the Bishop observed one of the charity’s Spear classes, a pre-employment training course which helps disadvantaged young people grow their employability skills such as CV writing, team work, and public speaking.
Following the class, the Bishop had the opportunity to talk to some of the young people, to help gain a better understanding of how the programme works and how the skills they develop will help them progress into either further education or directly into the workplace.
Tom Jackson, CEO of the Resurgo Trust said:
“We wish to thank Bishop Richard for the support he has shown to Resurgo over the past ten years as we have sought to increase the local church’s impact in tackling social issues, such as youth unemployment. We were honoured to show Bishop Richard our award-winning Spear course today and thank him for his ongoing support.”
Named Guardian Charity of the Year in 2013, Resurgo was originally founded in Hammersmith in 2004 and has grown rapidly over the years. It currently runs eight Spear centres across London, all of which are connected and supported by their local churches. Over the past decade, the Spear Programme has helped over 2,500 young people into employment or education and currently supports 750 young people each year. Of those who graduate from the course, 75% are still in employment or training a year later.
A former participant of the Spear programme said:
“Before going to Spear I didn’t do much, I had lost all hope and didn’t really care anymore. Spear helped me develop my communication skills and as a result, I grew in confidence. I was put forward for a job at Marks & Spencer which is something I wouldn’t imagine enjoying but I love it! I’ve got my life back and it’s all thanks to Spear.”
