Transformative has been devised in and for the Diocese of London. It is about how the people of God learn and live the Gospel of Jesus Christ through the Eucharist. It celebrates our Diocesan life in London as one body in the one bread. It aims to fire up our zeal for growth and the transformation of hopes and lives.
Transformative will follow a distinct trajectory from November 2009 until Easter 2010, as follows:
St Paul speaks about the transformative effects of God’s action at every level of life, from material things of the earth to human societies and the cosmos itself. The Eucharist both celebrates and contributes to this process of transformation. This was the focus of this innovative study course, which attracted a satisfyingly wide range of people from across the Diocese. All the speaker contributions and the subsequent conversations were rich and rewarding. These will contribute to generating material for the Lent Course in 2010.
The materials for this course are presented, we hope, so as to meet the very varied needs of parishes. There are extended quotations from the Study Session speakers, visual and musical examples, related biblical texts, as well as passages from other writers on some of the themes.
Leaders may choose from among these resources, to provide material for reflection and conversation in their groups. There are also suggested questions for discussion, which include both ideas-based and more experiential questions. They should be of use in ecumenical groups, groups that meet in small house gatherings, bigger meetings that break out into discussion cells and so on.
They contain a variety of options, therefore, and are being made available online as a simple Word document so that group leaders can customise the material to their own needs.

The climax of Transformative will be in the great liturgies of Holy Week and Easter – celebrated with much variety across the Diocese, and concentrating our focus on the paschal mystery which is at the heart of the Eucharist. At St Paul’s Cathedral itself this will of course include the Chrism Eucharist and the Easter Vigil, at which the Bishop baptizes and confirms (3 April 2010).
This liturgical re-visiting of the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus is to be the goal and experience that is truly Transformative, truly the action of the Holy Spirit, truly empowerment for future mission. This is ‘liturgy’ as ‘work’ – the celebration of sins forgiven, lives transformed, the earth renewed, the kingdom revealed, creation restored, and all humanity gathered at the banquet of life in heaven.
