Christ Church Southgate welcomes Bishop of Edmonton to its patronal festival

Christ Church Southgate

The congregation and community at Christ Church Southgate have celebrated the church’s patronal festival, Christ the King, with the new Bishop of Edmonton, The Right Reverend Robert Wickham. This year’s festival is particularly special as 2015 is the 400th year of continuous worship at the site of Christ Church Southgate.

The event was Bishop Rob’s first visit to the church. He preached the Eucharist and, following the service, the whole church community celebrated with a lunch. A concert was held in the evening to mark the occasion.

The Bishop of Edmonton, The Rt Revd Rob Wickham, said during his sermon:

“The story of Southgate is caught up in this hallowed place. For centuries and beyond, the people of Southgate have seen Jesus dancing in this church, dancing in our streets. Jesus has been proclaimed here in the great numbers of baptisms, funerals and weddings in this place.”

A special programme of events to mark the 400th anniversary has been underway throughout 2015, including a special anniversary Eucharist with the Bishop of London. Other highlights have included sell-out silent film nights featuring live accompaniment by the church organists, jazz evenings, dances, photography and artists’ open days and talks on the history of the church, the parish and its people.

2015 has also seen the arrival of new vicar, Fr Chrichton Limbert and the licensing of The Reverend Hazel Miall as Associate Priest. From December, the church is introducing new services; opening its doors for worship six days a week. Christ Church Southgate will also be holding its first Christingle Service on 6th December and a “Pop Up” nativity on 20th December.

Fr Chrichton Limbert, Vicar of Christ Church Southgate said:

“Bishop Robert has a positive, inspirational presence and his visit was a wonderful way to energise us as we begin a new church year!”
