Last Wednesday, the Bishop of Stepney, the Rt Revd Stephen Oliver, went on a post-Easter away-day visit with clergy colleagues.
They visited the steam engine named “Stepney” built in 1875, 20 years before the appointment of the first Bishop of Stepney in the Diocese of London. The steam engine, which took the Bishop's colleagues on a trip up the Bluebell line in Sussex, is being withdrawn from surface for a refit and restoration.
Stepney the 'Bluebell' Engine is the subject of a story written by the Revd W Awdry of Thomas the Tank Engine fame.
