St John's Hackney is to host a film and a public meeting on the desperate plight of refused asylum seekers.
The Revd Rob Wickham, Rector of Hackney, will chair a panel discussion between Tom Davies of Amnesty International, Debora Singer of Asylum Aid, Meg Hillier, MP for Hackney, and Majorie Nshemere from Women for Refugee Women
Rayah Feldman, Hackney Refugee and Migrant Support Group.
The discussion will be in response to the film Still Human - Still Here by documentary maker Nick Broomfield for Amnesty International.
Rob Wickham commented:
"Almost daily churches, in Hackney and right across this world city, listen and respond to the painful stories of people who have been refused asylum in this country. I am thrilled that there will be a public debate on this issue during Holy Week in the heart of Hackney. Such marks of suffering and alienation abound in our society and viewed from the context of the cross, we must continue to respond to these deep needs within our parishes. May this evening become part of our response to the cry 'My God, my God, Why have you abandoned me'".
Still Human - Still Here will be shown on Wednesday 19 March, 8pm-9.30pm at St John’s Church, Lower Clapton Road, Hackney.
