Two London churches have won prizes in the Church Times Green Church Awards.
St Andrew’s Fulham Fields won an award in the Action in the Community category for its ‘Fruit and Veg co-op’ that distributes fresh produce around the neighbourhood.
The Revd Martin Eastwood, Parish Priest of St Andrew's, commented:
"We are delighted that this project, which involves members of the local community, has received this recognition. This is one of many ways in which St Andrew’s is seeking to reach out to the local community."
St Aldhelm’s, Edmonton, has again been recognised for its excellent solar energy scheme in winning a prize in the Energy Saving in Church Buildings category.
St Aldhelm’s has also recently featured in a short, green film produced by Good Energy and Green TV. The films focus on how to generate electricity at home and demonstrate the benefits of ‘microgeneration’.
In the film, the Vicar of St Aldhelm’s, the Revd David Bolster, explains that the solar panel project has already generated enough electricity to power seven houses. The church has just received its first payment for the excess energy the solar panels have generated that can be fed back to the National Grid.
St James’s Piccadilly was also highly commended for its project to install photovoltaic cells on the church roof.
