Over 500 men and women from churches of all denominations across London gathered in Regents Park last week to take part in the annual London Churches Football Tournament organised by the Church on the Corner in Islington.
St Mary’s Finchley ladies team won this year’s 5-a-side women’s competition topping their group of 6 teams and beating Eltham Green 2-1 in the final, with goals from Rebecca Slater and Captain, Debbie Salman. The men’s 7-a-side trophy was retained by the Good Shepherd Mission from Bethnal Green.
The first tournament was held in 2003 to raise funds for the then new Anglican Church, the Church on the Corner that worships in an old pub in the Islington Deanery. In the following years, the tournament has supported different charities and this year the money raised will be going towards funding a ‘Sports Minister’ who will work with children at risk, young offenders, and in local schools, bringing football and the Church together.
The 2008 tournament will once again be held on the May bank holiday in Regents Park and it is hoped that there will be even more churches competing next year.
