World Debt Day - Sunday 16 May

20/04/04

Six years ago, over 70,000 Jubilee 2000 supporters formed a human chain in Birmingham to call for the cancellation of the crippling debts of some of the world's poorest nations.

On this sixth anniversary, parishes are encouraged to ask God's blessing on the continued struggle for a fairer and more just global economy.

Free worship materials are available at www.jubileedebtcampaign.org.uk/default.asp?action=article&ID=334

London’s partner dioceses in Angola and Mozambique have been sent the worship materials in Portuguese. The Mothers’ Union has also been spreading news of the day in many dioceses beyond our shores and the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, has sent a message of support, "I wish Jubilee Debt Campaign every blessing for their World Debt Day campaign. On Sunday 16 May, we can, as individual Christians, and together in churches and communities, reflect on the problems of world debt, share in thanksgiving for what has been achieved, and perhaps most importantly, ask for God’s blessing on our continued struggle for a fairer and more just global economy."
