St John at Hackney Churchyard Gardens have reached the semi-finals of The National Lottery Awards 2009, in the Best Heritage Project category.

Once a magnet for anti-social behaviour, having fallen into significant decline over a number of years, today, the garden is an oasis in one of the most densely populated, built-up areas of London.

Following this transformation, it has reached the semi-finals of the Awards which recognise the impact of lottery funded projects on places, people and communities.

Fr Rob Wickham, Rector of Hackney  said:

"Life in all its fullness now flourishes thanks to the St John at Hackney Churchyard restoration. Once a no go area for most, now the whole community feels at home and at peace in its hallowed surroundings. Please vote for us, and let the people of Hackney take pride once again in these glorious gardens which speak of our heritage."

The top three Best Heritage Projects will be decided by a public vote. To find out more and register your vote, visit the National Lottery Awards website - www.lotterygoodcauses.org.uk/awards.

The National Lottery Awards are an annual search to find the UK’s favourite Lottery-funded projects and celebrate the people behind them, the great work that they do and the difference that they make.
