Children from Haringey and Enfield schools joined Christians across the country in celebrating the feast of Corpus Christi today, marking the occasion with a special Eucharistic procession and a visit from the Bishop of Edmonton.
Pupils from local schools The Green, All Hallows and St Ann’s and St Paul’s in Haringey, and St Michael at Bowes and St John’s and St James’ in Enfield joined in acts of worship at St Mary the Virgin Church, Tottenham and learnt what the Eucharist means. The celebrations ended with a series of presentations about the beginnings of the church and a Eucharistic procession.
Father Luke Miller, Area Dean for East Haringey said:
"This is a very special occasion for the deanery schools that do not often get the chance to work so closely together as they are split between the Enfield and Haringey Local Authorities.
"As a commemoration of the Last Supper, the final meal that Jesus Christ shared with his disciples before his arrest and eventual crucifixion, Corpus Christi is an extremely important day in the Churches calendar. I am particularly pleased that we have the opportunity to teach local children about its significance. Current Religious Education provision does not focus on the Eucharist which is the central act of Christian worship."
The event has a particular significance for the group of children, many of whom were born in the year of the Bishop’s consecration in 1999.
The Bishop of Edmonton, the Rt Revd Peter Wheatley, who attended a lunch with the children said:
"I am delighted to be able to join the children in honouring the Eucharist today.
"Our Church Schools in Haringey and Enfield do a remarkable job of educating local children. I am especially pleased that the children are being taught why the Church of England marks the Eucharist in this way."
