IntoUniversity Community project

This year we celebrate 26 years of work in our local community, in Notting Dale, London. Our Community Education Programme provides opportunities for local people, especially children, to extend their education, pursue their interests and enjoy learning. We are a voluntary sector agency, run by the Parish, that manages and provides a regular programme of activities and special events to meet the needs of groups and individuals within the local community. Our flagship project is called IntoUniversity and we are planning to develop 5 new IntoUniversity centres by 2010.

IntoUniversity has been successfully running for four years at St Clement & St James Community Project in North Kensington. A new charity called IntoUniversity has been set up to launch five new IntoUniversity centres by 2010. The network will begin its expansion with two new centres in London but our ambition is to operate in disadvantaged communities across England. At each local centre IntoUniversity will offer an innovative programme that supports young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to attain either a university place or another chosen aspiration.

IntoUniversity aims to address underachievement and social exclusion among young people by offering an integrated programme of out-of-school study, mentoring, aspirational coaching, personal support and, in partnership with universities, specially-devised FOCUS weeks, days and weekends. IntoUniversity is an on-going and long-term service: at the heart of the programme is the belief that underachievement is best addressed in the context of a long-term pastoral engagement with young people where we can build their esteem and support their learning in order that they can reach their potential. We build relationships with young people at Year 3 and continue to support them up to university access and beyond.
