The Diocese of London (www.london.anglican.org) has the largest membership of any in the Church of England. It serves a
population of more than 3.5 million in eighteen boroughs north of the Thames through 479 parish churches, 147 schools, a host of
chaplaincies and other projects. The Church is ethnically diverse and growing in accordance with the strategy set out in
The London Challenge, the plan endorsed and published by the London Diocesan Synod.
The General Secretary is a key member of the London team, directly responsible to the Bishop of London and working in collaboration with
the Area Bishops and other colleagues in a commitment to professional management of the complex and evolving work of the Diocese.
The Role
After a very successful ten year incumbency we are seeking to
recruit a General Secretary who will:
• Play a key role in the Diocesan team in shaping strategy and
ensuring that effective operational support is in place to
achieve the agreed goals;
• Lead and manage professional colleagues in areas such as
the Finance, Property and Human Resources departments;
• Take a leading role in the planning and management of
major new projects.
The Candidate
• You will be a professional, ideally a qualified accountant,
with proven financial and commercial competence.
• You will have worked at Board level, managed significant
teams within commercial organisations and be able to
demonstrate a record of success.
• You will be a capable communicator; able to sustain and
develop effective relationships at all levels of the Diocese
and externally.
• You will be confident in chairing meetings with authority but be
able to recognise that the role requires sensitive team working.
• You should be sympathetic with the Christian faith and able
to be committed to the mission of the Diocese of London.
