Informal discussion with the controversial Bishop in a relaxed, cafe-style setting
Bishop Jack Spong, America's best known and most controversial Anglican Bishop will speak in Holloway on October 23rd. He is coming to the U.K. to introduce his just published book, "Eternal Life: A New Vision -- Beyond Religion, Beyond Theism, Beyond Heaven and Hell," which recasts the discussion of life after death to a whole new plane. It suggests that the traditional view of life after death based on record books, an intervening supernatural deity and efforts at behaviour control has become unbelievable to many even within the church. Unwilling to accept the obvious alternative that there is no life after death and that it is little more than wish fulfilment and pious delusion, Bishop Spong seeks to go into the depths of life, not beyond it, in his quest for eternity.
Over the last four decades Bishop Spong has championed civil rights for minorities, full acceptance for women in both church and society and the full inclusion of gay and lesbian people in the life of the church. He has done this while at the same time claiming the Bible as his ally in this struggle and calling for a radical new reformation that will deliver the Christian Church from 1st century biblical literalism, 4th century creedal orthodoxy and 13th century liturgical practices. He has offered, in the words of one of his titles, "A New Christianity for a New World."
You are invited to listen to him talk about his idea of Christianity in a cafe style setting over a drink and snacks.
