Welcome to the Edmonton Episcopal Area.
Edmonton is the special responsibility of the Bishop of Edmonton the Rt Rev Peter Wheatley, supported by the Archdeacon of Hampstead, the .
The Archdeaconry is divided into seven deaneries which are:
North Camden (Hampstead) Deanery
South Camden (Holborn & St Pancras) Deanery
The Edmonton Area covers the four north London Boroughs of Barnet, Camden, Enfield and Haringey. These four boroughs have between them a wealth of cultural diversity as well as the extreme economic contrasts between, for example Hampstead and Tottenham. Across the Area, there are large ethnic minority communities, in particular from the Caribbean, Africa and the Indian sub-continent as well as from Turkey and Greece. The Church of England here has strong links with other faith communities – in particular, with the Jewish community in Hendon and Golders Green and with the Greek Orthodox Churches in Camden and Wood Green.
Across the four boroughs there are three voluntary aided secondary schools with chaplains based in two other secondary schools (Greig City Academy and Highgate School). There are forty-eight voluntary aided primary schools and one voluntary controlled primary school.
The Edmonton Area has several nationally-known hospitals including the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead and University College Hospital in Camden as well as the internationally-known, Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital in Holborn. There are two hospices with Area clergy serving as chaplains.
The diversity of the Edmonton Area is demonstrated by the wide range of other organisations at work within its boundaries: the Royal Veterinary College, Camden; Inglis Barracks, Mill Hill and the Inns of Courts, Holborn. Recently refurbished and re-launched are the Retreat and Conference facilities of St Peter Bourne in Friern Barnet. There is also the Anglican Convent of St Mary at the Cross in Edgware run by the Benedictines.
