This document should be a summary of the historic development and main features of the church building. It is needed when making changes to a listed church.
The Statement of Significance should show when the various parts of the building were constructed and when notable additions were made to the interior, for instance the pews, the pulpit, organ or stained glass. It should summarise why they are important.
The Statement should particularly highlight the significance of those parts which are to be altered.
To create this document you can find the information in the list description, from your own parish records and from the records held in the DAC office. Other sources of useful information could be the Quinquennial Inspector, the Local Council, local historical societies or amenity societies.
If you require further advice, please speak to your Archdeacon or the Care of Churches Team.
