Re-ordering your Church

Below is a simplified outline of the process you might expect to undertake for a typical re-ordering project:

1. Have your inspiration or idea.

2. Talk to your Archdeacon, church architect and Care of Churches Team. Discuss the matter at the PCC.

3. Draw up an outline plan, full plans can be expensive so sketch designs can help provide early indications of what the DAC and others might think. A visit can be undertaken by either an officer or several members of the DAC.

4. Re-orderings vary in complexity. If you simply wish to move some furniture around you may trial the work with an Archdeacons Temporary Licence. If what you have mind is more substantial then you will almost certainly need a Faculty.

5. The DAC office will inform you if it is necessary to consult with English Heritage, any relevant Amenity Societies and the Local Authority.

6. Once the plans and documentation have been submitted, the DAC Architects Group will review them and the DAC will discuss them. The Committee may then ask further questions or request a visit the site if it has not already taken place. Alternatively, if it is content, the Committee may issue a Form 1 Certificate. This may come with provisos requesting further details as they become available.

7. The Certificate is sent to the PCC along with the Petition for Faculty forms. The forms should be filled in and a public notice displayed at your church.

8. The public notice stays up for 28 days and provides an opportunity for the local community to comment on what you propose to do.

9. Once the 28 days have passed, the PCC sends the details of the scheme, the Petition for Faculty and the Certificate issued by the DAC to the Chancellor via the Registry.

10. The Chancellor will then decide whether or not to issue a faculty.
