The following minor works do not require a faculty although it is recommended that churches contact their Archdeacon or the Care of Churches Team before starting work.
1. Cruets.
2. Vases.
3. Kneelers, hassocks and cushions (but not a substantial replacement of them).
4. Surplices, albs, cassocks, choir robes and vergers’ robes.
5. Authorised service books.
6. Hymn books, song books, bibles and choir and organ music (but not disposal of handbound or other valuable books).
7. Replacement of altar linen in the same design (but not the introduction for the first time of altar frontal or falls, or the replacement of any such item with a different design).
8. Decorative banners used for displays not lasting more than three months.
9. Replacement of worn-out flags with identical items, provided that the original flags had been authorised by faculty.
10. Temporary items of decoration for the church such as Christmas trees, wedding and harvest decorations.

1. Furniture and fixtures in detached church halls (except where the church hall is separately listed).
2. Introduction of furniture and furnishings and minor fixtures (excluding wall safes) in vestries.
3. Fire extinguishers (subject to Archdeacon’s instructions as to location and method of fixing).
4. Introduction of small, movable bookcase, or display stands.
5. Replacement of carpets or curtains in the same colour (provided that the type of carpet and its backing/underlay was recommended by the Diocesan Advisory Committee when it was first laid).
6. Installation of new equipment in kitchens and toilet accommodation.
7. Installation of telephone lines in vestries, together with any associated equipment, including telephones, faxes and computer terminals.
1. Works of routine maintenance on the fabric of the church (not materially altering its appearance) including scaffolding, up to £5,000 (excluding VAT, and excluding the cost of any scaffolding) provided that the Archdeacon is notified before the contract to carry out the work is entered into. This work includes, for example, replacement like-for-like of broken roof tiles or slates or clear window glass and cleaning gutters and downpipes but excludes repairs to broken or cracked quarries in clear glazed windows and tiled floors.
2. Works of routine maintenance of electrical fittings or other electrical equipment (by approved NICEIC electricians) and furniture up to a cost of £2000 excluding VAT. No addition of any new fitting to an existing electrical system is to be undertaken unless expressly authorised by the Archdeacon and the church’s insurance company has been notified.
3. Work consisting of the monitoring of cracks in the fabric of the church provided it is carried out under the supervision of an architect or engineer.
1. Replacement of defective gutters and/or drainpipes in identical materials in accordance with the written specification of the church’s architect and the written approval of the Archdeacon if he considers it an appropriate case.
2. Installation of security locks on doors and/or windows when the Archdeacon is satisfied that they are urgently required and the type of lock has been approved by him in writing.
3. Installation of a burglar alarm or security lighting or camera(s) on a temporary basis, where there is urgent need to protect the building against burglary or vandalism pending the grant of a Faculty for a permanent scheme, provided the temporary arrangement is approved in writing by the Archdeacon and the Diocesan Registrar is notified by the Archdeacon that he has given his approval.
4. Installation of a lightning conductor where the Archdeacon considers that it is urgently required provided that the location of the wiring has been approved in writing by the church’s architect and by the Archdeacon.
Note: Any permission given under any of these items includes scaffolding where necessary for the purpose of carrying out the work.
1. Routine tuning of organs, harmoniums and pianos.
2. Maintenance and repairs to pianos using matching materials.
1. Repair of rope guides without alteration or provision of guides at upper levels.
2. Bolting or re-bolting of bellframe to beams below frame.
3. Tightening and/or renewal of frame bolts.
4. Repair or renewal of pulleys as existing.
5. Repair or renewal of bellropes.
6. Oiling, greasing, renewal like-for-like of bearings.
7. Repair or renewal of gudgeons, stays or sliders.
8. Repair of conventional two piece or split wheels
9. Repair or replacement like-for-like of broken clappers.
Inspection and routine maintenance of clocks and clock faces (excluding repairs and redecoration).
1. Purchase and maintenance of lawnmowers and other churchyard maintenance equipment.
2. Routine maintenance of paths not amounting to resurfacing.
3. Repairs to and repainting in the same colour of a notice-board (but not replacement of a notice-board, which requires a Faculty, even when the replacement is on a like-for-like basis).
4. Resurfacing forecourt (not being part of a churchyard) in the same material.
1. The above list has been prepared to assist parochial church councils. It is expected that they will in all cases where approval of the Archdeacon is required obtain such approval before entering into a contract for work to be carried out. Failure to do so may result in the need for a Confirmatory Faculty for which a fee can be charged.
2. Although movable items listed above can be removed from the church or church hall, no item should be disposed of without first consulting the Archdeacon.
3. A Faculty is not required for deposit of parochial registers in the diocesan record office.
4. Any matter not included in this list will require a Faculty.
