Scaffolding being erected
Churches all require repairs at some point. Below is a simplified outline of the process you might expect to undertake for a typical repair project.
Minor repairs will be considered to be minor works and will not require a faculty. More major repairs will require a faculty.
1. Talk to the Care of Churches Team or the Archdeacon's office at an early stage. Discuss the matter at the PCC.
2. If a faculty is required, your architect will need to provide key drawings of your proposals.
3. A full specification of repair work should be prepared along with photographs of the areas affected.
4. Structural engineers' reports may also be required in certain circumstances.
5. Once the plans and documentation have been submitted, the DAC Architects Group will review them and the DAC will discuss them. The Committee may then ask further questions or request a visit to the site if it has not already taken place. Alternatively, if it is content, the Committee may issue a Form 1 Certificate. This may come with provisos requesting further details as they become available.
6. The Certificate is sent to the PCC along with the Petition for Faculty forms. The forms should be filled in and a public notice displayed at your church.
7. The public notice stays up for 28 days and provides an opportunity for the local community to comment on what you propose to do.
8. Once the 28 days have passed, the PCC sends the details of the scheme, the Petition for Faculty and the Certificate issued by the DAC to the Chancellor via the Registry.
9. The Chancellor will then decide whether or not to issue a Faculty.
