Stephen Oliver
Stephen Oliver was educated at Manchester Central Grammar School and King’s College, London. He trained for the ministry at St. Augustine’s College, Canterbury, having sensed a call to the ordained life in his early twenties.
His first parish roles were in Nottinghamshire where in both Clifton and Newark he ministered to the residents of large housing estates, becoming familiar with the problems of poverty and social deprivation.
Passionate about communicating the gospel, Stephen then went on to become chief producer of religious broadcasting for the BBC. He was part of the team responsible for Radio 4’s ‘The Moral Maze’, the first outdoor ‘Songs of Praise’ television broadcast and he produced the first Radio 4 ‘Daily’ and ‘Morning’ Services from overseas.
In 1991 he moved to Leeds as the first Team Rector of the City Centre Team Ministry before he joined St.Paul’s Cathedral as Canon Residentiary and Precentor in 1997.
Stephen has been married to Hilary, a senior nurse and Head of Continence Services for a primary healthcare provider, for more than 30 years. They have two grown up sons, Simon, chaplain to Hertford College, Oxford, and Adam, an agricultural consultant in Poland. He is fascinated by anything to do with aeroplanes and flying but confesses to a fear of heights.
