In January 2002 the Bishop of London launched 'The London Challenge'. Its purpose was to dispel the popular myths about the Church in London and to challenge us to redefine the Church to fit 21st Century London.
Five years later London Challenge 2012 was launched. It reaffirmed several commitments, including:
We are committed to sharing the good news of Jesus Christ in 21st century London
We are committed to telling the story of Jesus Christ afresh for this generation and especially for the young
The Bishop of London's Mission Fund continues to play its part in the fulfilment of these commitments by offering support to varied and imaginative mission work in the Diocese.
Applications are welcomed from all ecclesial communities and chaplaincies that operate within the Diocese of London.
The Mission Fund does not have concrete eligibility criteria but applications must:
Each application is considered on its own merits. However, the Mission Fund is unlikely to fund additional curates or to support posts that are essentially administrative in nature.
As the work of the Mission Fund Board continues it is likely that the Board will wish to add to the above in the light of its experience. Such additions will be communicated by the amendment of these guidelines from time to time.
The first step is to talk to your archdeacon about funding for your project in general. A representative from the Mission Fund is assigned to each application as an advocate. The advocate will give assistance throughout the process and will also ask questions about the application in order to identify any potential weaknesses. When the Mission Fund Board meets, the representative will present the application to the other members. Following the Mission Fund's meeting, the advocate will communicate the Board's decision and provide further advice as necessary.
Guidance on how to apply is available.
If you have any questions about applying to the Mission Fund or about the process please contact , the Secretary. If you have already been assigned a member of the Mission Fund as a representative please contact him or her.
The Diocese now has grant-making status for Church Urban Fund grants. Visit Church Urban Fund Grants for more information.
