Amenity Societies

St Bride, Fleet Street

There is a need to consult with the National Amenity Societies for most work to historic church buildings. Whom you consult depends on the age of the building, or part of the building you intend to alter.

Before 1715 - Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings

1700-1840 - The Georgian Group

1837-1914 - The Victorian Society

1914 onwards - The Twentieth Century Society

Major changes of all periods - The Ancient Monuments Society

In some cases the Council for the Care of Churches may also need to be consulted.

The Care of Churches Team can advise on who should be consulted. It is best to contact the relevant society as soon as possible when developing plans so you are aware of what they think and can take their comments into consideration.

The Chancellor of the Diocese may require consultation with the relevant society before deciding the Faculty. If you have not done this it could hold the process up whilst their views are sought.
